The beauty of a straight cut is that it allows a small, deep amount of weight and texture into your curls, making it so that you don't need a great lot of weight and texture all at once. You'll see in the photo above where I have an inlay that is exactly right, but instead of being very large and detailed (or so I'd suggest), the inlay is smaller.
This is because this is a straight cut. And here's why. I like to keep some of my curls longer, so that they don't have a wide cut. If I can create too much weight on my head during my hair shaping, my neck, shoulders, and neckline will hurt greatly. You could even think I'm about to start having too much tension on my body during my hair shaping. I know, I know, I know.
So you can see I usually use a straight straight, but I could change up my hair more often if I really wanted to. I'll show you how to create a pattern like this:
