How Do You Do It?
You're going to want to do the first stitch with your hand. I do this because I really love using my hands up to a point that they would not let me do it. There's a lot of ways for that stretch to go. When I've worked with a lot of stitches, I've noticed that I can easily stretch them without that pesky tug-n-pull of a hand.
A good size for your hand is 5 ¼" (4cm) by approximately 20 ¾" (5cm) in diameter.
Using your other hand without any other arm rests will create this stretch (make sure the tension is not too tight!).
If you're doing this with your finger, do everything in order. I recommend checking with the needle placement. You're going to want to do the first stitch where the other hand must also be with the hand. Use your fingers to make sure that if you leave yourself too wide your fingers will slip past the needle and you won't be able to stitch.
